New Orleans, the “Crescent City” know for it’s music, festivals, cuisine, architecture, and soul, is one of the most unique cities in the United States. It’s the perfect location for inspiration and creativity. When you arrive, we’ll settle you in to one of the finest inns on the streetcar line so you are rested and ready to enjoy the most amazing watercolor workshop, and have easy after class access to the French Quarter. Both sessions include an evening of music and a last day dinner.
Jim Anderson enjoys sharing the “tricks of the trade” to make watercolors or paintings in general “BELIEVABLE”. It is the illustrator’s eye and productive techniques that demystify the success of the art of painting. Usually described as one of the most difficult mediums to master, watercolor can be seen to be less intimidating when seen through the eyes of the successful illustrator/painter using a variety of studio solutions, strategies, techniques and shortcuts. Learning how to evaluate your paintings in progress more productively and avoid giving up on them prematurely is essential. There are no mistakes, there are only happy accidents waiting to be turned in to something special!
This 3-day workshop will focus on successful setup strategies, drawing, watercolor materials, principles of design, composition and color, the painter’s workspace, color palettes, drawing essentials, law of contrasts, lost and found, resource and reference materials, and how to think about your paintings in the progress to see opportunities instead of judging. Morning sessions (9-12) will be allocated to informal audio/visual presentations by the instructor of the most powerful ideas behind successful art. The instructor will share some his works as well as some of his favorite watercolor artists and their work. He will discuss his illustrator’s experience with a back pocket of tricks, shortcuts and do’s and don’t’s to avoid the most common mistakes and frustrations. Instructor demonstrations will also be incorporated. The afternoon session (1:30-5:00) will focus on individual student work with the instructor offering one-on-one input, dialogue and critique of work progress. Each student is expected to bring reasonable quality printed reference materials to select from each day as the student will work on a different sketch watercolor of their choice each day. A short group critique of work at days-end is always fun, time permitting. This course is limited to 12.
This 5-day master course is for students who have worked in the medium for some time and have explored the medium to some degree of success and enjoyment over several years of experimentation. The workshop will focus on new ways of thinking, about your paintings, work process and methods, and achieving a higher level of competence and skill with an emphasis on a more professional portfolio.
The morning session (9-12) will present informative ideas and input into the mind and experience of the illustrator and the problem-solving side of illusion and belief in two-dimensional space will presented. The opportunity to share the experiences of the instructor and investigate examples of professional watercolor works (by the instructor and others through audio/visual presentation will be included. The course will also include instructor demonstrations.
The afternoon session (1:30-5:00) will focus on individual student work with one-on-one guidance and critique from the instructor. The student will be expected to bring selected high quality printed reference material to the workshop and spend the 5 days working and executing a single watercolor of no smaller than 11×17 size. Course is limited to 5.
