SUSTAINABILITY IS OUR APPROACH

MISSION

The Future School is an international education project focused on sustainability. Our programs are dedicated to the development and implementations of strategies that address the challenges facing our global community.

Through an holistic, inclusive and trans-disciplinary approach, students engage in dynamic critical thinking, resulting in greater awareness and understanding of the problems affecting the future of our planet.

We offer academic study abroad programs and special interest cultural study tours, workshops, and service learning projects. Our programs are designed to welcome a wide variety of students, groups and communities. We maintain strong connections with universities, NGOs, private companies and government entities globally, to provide our students with opportunities to collaborate on significant impact initiatives.

OUR HISTORY

The Future School (TFS), founded and directed by Dana Bartelt in 2014, is the culmination of her over 30 years of initiating and directing successful study abroad programs. “Too often we’re stuck in our habits and self-imposed limitations. The Future School is a place to break free of ingrained ideas; a safe and exciting environment where both inspiration and aspiration can flourish,” says Dana.

Within months of the 1989 Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia, Ms Bartelt started a pioneer summer study abroad program to present to future generations the richness of intercultural exchange in Prague. In 2005, under her leadership, the summer program evolved to an all-year branch of North Carolina State University–The Prague Institute–where she was acting Director until 2014 when she founded The Future School. TFS fulfills Ms Bartelt’s goals to provide students with essential and innovative learning tools and applications to foster creativity and positive action with a sustainability focus.

In 2016, Ms. Bartelt chose Chile to start the Climate Change Advocacy program, given the climate variety and visible consequences throughout the country. During her research visits to establish the program, she met the designer and explorer Francisco Martínez.

Before studying Industrial Design at the Universidad de Chile, Mr. Martínez developed explorations to remote areas and the high mountains of the Chilean Andes, and began his commitment with natural environments and the observation of culture and orography. Mr. Martínez has worked independently, with design studios, and with diverse cultures across South-America, in underdeveloped regions such as Amazonia and the Atacama Desert.

Through research and prior collaborations, the The Future School team works with the best academics and practitioners in their fields as Instructors, Advisors, and Mentors to build unique programming seeking actions on the important issues, and cultivating the arts.

TESTIMONIALS - NOW AND THEN

About Francisco Martínez, I can say that having been on the same team either in a high school history contest or later as architecture developers, I can highlight not only his art skills but also the continuous learning experience produced by his passion for teaching.

I had the wonderful experience of getting to visit Prague for an Industrial Design studio in the summer of 2018. This trip changed my life and way of thinking in so many aspects that has given me another place for my mind to wander to when I am designing a project. The experience I had would have not been possible without Dana's years of involvement in education, her enthusiasm for culture, design, and, of course, people. The individuals that I had the opportunity to meet on this trip could only be described as the type of people that you think exist in documentaries where someone's passion for their craft and trade shapes the community they live in. If you ever have the opportunity to experience a study abroad coordinated by Dana Bartelt, it will be one of the best decisions you will ever make.

Dana Bartelt is one of our best program leaders...When I think of Dana, though, my mind’s eye does not see a dry picture of a determined teacher and administrator, but rather a passionate individual who deeply and genuinely cares about her art and her students. She has a vibrant presence that makes others take notice, and take an interest in whatever she is doing. This is the kind of professor students always hope to encounter, and the kind that will leave an indelible mark on their lives.

Ingrid R. Schmidt • 19 July, 1999 Director of Study Abroad, North Carolina State University in Letter of Recommendation for Dana Bartelt’s tenure application at Loyola University-New Orleans in reference to her Summer Study in Prague Program

The amazing experience that the Future School is, starts with Dana Bartelt. She helps curate a dynamic learning environment with her ability to give the students real world participation opportunities. Students get to connect with the culture, issues, and conditions of a particular focus area. They get to live and thrive in a different world than their own. Our experiences in Prague and all of the Czech Republic, such as working with Doctors Without Borders and visiting such places as Tugendhat Villa, engrain and embed themselves in the students’ DNA making them (in my case) better designers and, in a larger sense, better people. This is what education is meant to be–transformative. It is not a lesson that is mastered and forgotten; it is an experience that transforms the participant into becoming more than they were and wanting to continue to be and do more.
